[미국박사유학가기-10] SOP (Statement of Purpose), Personal History Statement 작성하기.

사실 SOP쓰는 방법을 써야 하나 고민을 했다. 왜냐면 내가 쓴 SOP가 잘쓴건지도 모르겠고 아무래도 자기소개의 성격이 강한 SOP 특성상 이렇게 써라! 라는 형식의 글은 무의미하기 때문이다. 따라서 대략 참고만 할 수 있도록 내가 쓴 SOP에 포함된 내용만 간단히 설명해 볼까 한다. 

나는 SOP를 대략 9월 말~10월 초부터 쓰기 시작했다. 11월에 원서 접수를 하기 위해서 한달정도 여유를 두고 글을 쓰기 시작했는데 생각보다 시간이 오래 걸렸다. 워낙 자기소개서도 이것저것 써봤고 대충 짜깁기 해서 금방 쓸 수있을듯 했는데 후딱후딱 써 나가다 잠깐 쉬면서 SOP의 세부 지시사항을 읽어보니 이렇게 써서는 안되겠구나 싶어서 다시 쓰기 시작했다. 

SOP 지시사항

먼저 내가 지원한 대학교들의 SOP 지시사항을 한번 보자.

Georgia Institute of Technology: The applicant must clearly indicate the reasons for wishing to study in this program at Georgia Tech as opposed to some other program or university. The biography should describe the applicant's academic background, training and experience and should mention honors, memberships, and extracurricular activities. Special areas of research or interest should be discussed. Please be concise and specific in your response. Your space is limited to 4000 characters. Please clearly indicate the reasons you wish to study in your chosen program at Georgia Tech as opposed to some other program or university. The biography should describe the applicant's academic background, training and experience and should mention honors, memberships, and extracurricular activities. Special areas of research or interest should be discussed. Please be concise and specific in your response. Your space is limited to 4000 characters. Purdue: Please submit a statement of approximately 300-500 words concerning your purpose for undertaking or continuing graduate study, your reasons for wanting to study at Purdue, and your professional plans, career goals, and research interests. You also may explain any irregularities or special circumstances applicable to your background and elaborate on your special abilities, awards, achievements, scholarly publications, and/or professional history. MIT: Please explain why you are a good candidate for graduate school. You should describe why you wish to attend graduate school, what you would like to study, and any research experience you have. Describe one or more accomplishments you are particularly proud of that suggest that you will succeed in your chosen area of research. UCLA: Please state your purpose in applying for graduate study. Describe your scholarly and research area(s) of interest, experiences that contributed to your preparation in the field, and your plans for your future occupation or profession. Briefly describe experiences that have prepared you for advanced study or research, and provide any additional information that may aid the selection committee in evaluating your preparation and aptitude for graduate study at UCLA. If you are applying for a research masters or doctoral program, you are encouraged to indicate specific research interests and potential faculty mentors. University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign (UIUC): Please submit your resume. List your academic and non-academic training experience (business, professional, research, military, etc.). Include the institution or organization (name, city, state, country), the nature of your work, and the dates for each listing. Please include memberships in honor societies and professional organizations; scholarships, prizes, honors, or other recognition; and give titles of publications, major papers, or theses of which you are author or co-author (if published, give citation). University of Texas, Austin (UT Austin): Describe your reasons for pursuing graduate study and your academic and professional interests and goals. Cornell: Please submit your statement of purpose. This one- or two-page statement states your reasons for undertaking graduate work and explains your academic interests, including their relation to your undergraduate study and professional goals.

각 학교별로 요구하는 내용이 약간씩 다르지만 SOP에 포함될만한 내용들은 대략 다음과 같다.

1. 나의 학업 경험

2. 수상경력/연구경력

3. 해당 대학원을 지원한 특정한 이유 (원하는 지도교수)

4. 내 커리어/학업 목표

먼저 학업경험은 지금까지의 학교 생활 경험을 쓰면 되지만 시간순의 단순 나열보다는 그렇게 공부해오는 과정에서 대학원을 지원하여 더 깊이 공부하고자 결심한 계기와 연결시켜주면 좋다. 애초에 Statement of Purpose라는 말에서 볼수 있듯이 가장 중요한 것은 "굳이 수많은 대학원들중 왜 우리 대학원에 지원하는건가?"라는 질문에 대한 명확한 답이 있어야 하기 때문이다. 따라서 내가 열심히 공부하고, 열심히 노력해서 얻은 수상경력들과 연구경력들이 결국엔 더 원대한 꿈!을 위하여 이 특정 학교에서 추가적으로 석/박사 학위를 하게끔 인도?!해주었다 라는 내용이 필요하다는 것이다. 

맨 위에 내가 SOP를 쉽게 쉽게 쓰다가 중간에 다시 시작한 이유가 바로 이때문이었다. 나는 그저 자기'소개'서를 작성하고 있었지 이러한 경험들이 '왜 이학교에서 대학원 학위를 하고 싶은지'에 대한 연결고리가 없었기 때문이다. 먼저 SOP의 스토리를 다시 구상하기 시작했다. 내가 전자과/반도체에 어떻게 관심을 갖게 되었는지 고민해보았고 내가 대학원고민하던 학부때를 다시 떠올렸다. 그렇게 되돌아보니 내가 무작정 수능 점수 맞춰 전자과에 온 것이 아니란것을 어느정도 깨닫게? 되었다. 어릴때부터 외국생활을 하면서 한국에 대해 무지하던 외국인들이 점점 한국문화와 한국산 전자기기등에 관심을 가지며 한국의 위상이 급성장하던 1999~2000년을 직접 체험했기 때문에 한국의 전자업계가 어릴때부터 멋져 보였다. 

또한 실제 갓 초등학교를 졸업하고 싱가폴 미국 국제 중학교(Singapore American School, SAS)에 입학했던 1999년에 싱가폴에서 스크랩했던 신문기사를 보면서 작아지는 반도체칩이 정말 신기했고 '내 미래 자녀들에게 필요할수도 있는 기사'라고 짤막하게 노트까지 해두었던 (실제로는 자녀들은 커녕 당장 내가 이걸로 먹고 살아야하는 내용이지만..ㅎㅎ) 적이 있었다.

이렇듯 어릴때부터 전자과로 진학할 수 있도록 어느정도 연결고리들이 있었고 이를 녹여서 SOP를 써보기로 계획을 먼저 짰다. 그리고 군대에서의 짧은 경험담을 언급하며 성실함, 협동심의 중요성을 깨달아서 그렇게 살려고 노력하고 있다는 것을 아주 짧게 언급했다. 교과외 과정에 대해서도 간략하게 써두었다. 글자수는 학교마다 다르므로 그에 맞춰서 썼지만 대략 1장반정도로 작성하였다. 뼈대를 먼저 작성한뒤 학교별로 요구사항에 맞춰서 조금씩 수정하여 완성했다.  

Personal (history) Statement

버클리대학 (University of California Berkeley, UCB)이나 미시건대학 (University of Michigan)의 경우 SOP와는 별개로 Personal Statement를 요구했다. 

각 학교의 SOP, Personal Statement 지시사항을 보자.

​University of Michigan: - SOP The Academic Statement of Purpose should be a concise, well-written statement about your academic and research background, your career goals, and how this graduate program will help you meet your career and educational objectives. - Personal Statement How have your background and life experiences, including cultural, geographical, financial, educational or other opportunities or challenges, motivated your decision to pursue a graduate degree at the University of Michigan? For example, if you grew up in a community where educational, cultural, or other opportunities were either especially plentiful or especially lacking, you might discuss the impact this had on your development and interests. This should be a discussion of the journey that has led to your decision to seek a graduate degree. Please do not repeat your Academic Statement of Purpose. University of California Berkeley: -SOP Please describe your aptitude and motivation for graduate study in your area of specialization, including your preparation for this field of study, your academic plans or research interests in your chosen area of study, and your future career goals. Please be specific about why UC Berkeley would be a good intellectual fit for you. - Personal History Statement Please describe how your personal background and experiences inform your decision to pursue a graduate degree. In this section, you may also include any relevant information on how you have overcome barriers to access higher education, evidence of how you have come to understand the barriers faced by others, evidence of your academic service to advance equitable access to higher education for women, racial minorities, and individuals from other groups that have been historically underrepresented in higher education, evidence of your research focusing on underserved populations or related issues of inequality, or evidence of your leadership among such groups. The Personal History Statement is required for all applicants. Please note that the Personal History Statement should not duplicate the Statement of Purpose.

지시사항에서도 볼 수 있듯이 두 학교 모두 Personal Statement를 작성할때 SOP를 베끼지 말라고 써있다. Personal Statement는 어떤 내용을 써야 하는지 읽어보면, 대략적으로 SOP에서 언급한 학업/연구경력의 경험 이외에 사회생활/개인적인 경험/문화적 경험 등을 통하여 내가 왜 이런 학문에 뜻을 두게 되었으며 이 특정 대학원을 지원하게 되었는지를 작성하라고 되어있다. 사실상 타학교들에서 작성한 SOP에서 비학업적 경험이었던 군대생활, 외국생활 등 나의 개인적 사회 경험을 언급하면서 결국에는 왜 지원했냐!?에 대한 대답을 이리저리 녹여내어야 한다는 뜻이었다. 따라서 Personal Statement를 요구하는 학교의 경우 이미 써둔 SOP 뼈대에서 철저히 학업적/비학업적 부분을 나누어서 SOP에는 학업적 경험을 통하여 해당 학교에 지원하게 된 동기 위주로 쓰고, 나머지 비학업적 부분을 통하여 지원하게된 동기는 Personal Statement에 포함하면 된다는 뜻이다.

추가 질문들?

SOP와 Personal Statement 말고 짧게 한두 문단으로 추가 질문에 대한 작성을 요구하는 학교도 있었다.

Stanford의 경우를 보면 다음과 같이 자신의 과거 경험/문화적 배경/경력들 중 추후에 스탠포드에 입학한다면 스탠포드의 문화적 다양성에 어떤 기여를 할 수 있으며 또한 결국 이를 통해 스탠포드의 학우들에게 어떻게 도움이 될 수 있는지 쓰라고 요구한다. 

Stanford University regards the diversity of its graduate student body as an important factor in serving the educational mission of the university. We encourage you to share unique, personally important, and/or challenging factors in your background, such as work and life experiences, special interests, culture, socioeconomic status, the quality of your early educational environment, gender, sexual orientation, race or ethnicity. Please discuss how such factors would contribute to the diversity of the entering class, and hence to the experience of your Stanford classmates. (700자)

어떻게 써야하나? .. 사실 당황스럽다. 우리나라에서 오래 살았다면 다양한 외국인들과 교류한 경험이 그리 많지 않을수도 있고 더 나아가서 이게 어떻게 스탠포드의 문화적 다양성에 도움이 될까?!라는 후덜덜한 질문에 대한 답은... 음.. 쥐어짜내야 한다. 배낭여행을 하면서 문화적 다양성에 대한 포용력을 갖게 되었다거나, 국내에서 외국인들과 교류하면서 남을 배려하는 법을 배웠다는 둥.. 이런 이야기들을 잘 생각해 내서 쓰면 될것 같다. 

교정/번역?

많은 분들이 전문 업체에 교정과 번역을 의뢰하고 있는 것으로 알고 있다. 하지만 나는 대학원 다닐때 우리 연구실 모든 논문과 학회 발표 Script의 Proof reading을 담당했기 때문에 그냥 내 SOP도 내가 직접 작성/교정했다. 처음부터 끝까지 내가 작성하였고 마지막으로는 미국 대학원 박사과정에 있는 한국 친구에게 한번 보여주고 마무리 지었다. 하지만 고급스러우면서도 자연스러운 영어 표현을 위해서 교정과 번역을 의뢰할 사람들은 그렇게 해도 무방할 것 같다.

결론

아무튼 SOP와 Personal Statement를 쓰면서 다시 한번 GRE Analytical Writing에서 Argue지문의 마지막 지시사항 문단의 지대한 중요성만큼이나 SOP/Personal Statement의 지시사항도 꼼꼼히 읽으며 써야 한다는 점을 깨달았다. 어떤 내용을 요구하는지 지시사항을 자세히 읽고 그 지시사항에 따라 차근차근 쓰면 될것같다. 하지만 급하게 하지말고 최소 한두달의 여유기간을 두고 뼈대완성, 작성, 교정을 찬찬히 해나가기를 추천한다. 아무리 완벽해보여도 다시 읽어보면 손댈 부분이 꽤 많아 보이기 때문이다.
